For one of my classes at Texas A&M, we learned how to operate the manual lathes and milling machines.  To practice our newly acquired skills, we were tasked with fabricating hammers.  I went a bit above what was required and added knurling to the handle and did the extra credit brass head.  We also learned threading and the use of Helicoils.  We later used the same facility to work on our senior design projects
